LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art) have a very well established exam syllabus which students can work through. LAMDA exams are accredited ie recognised by drama schools, and other colleges, and Grades 6 – 8 give students UCAS points in their University Application.
Students can also get much out of following the LAMDA syllabus on a more personal level. The Acting syllabus requires that they prepare two acting pieces (scenes) to present to an examiner. These can either be monologues or duologues, depending on whether they have chosen to work with a partner or not.
During this preparation they develop their acting skills and they work much more closely with me than in a group piece. This one-to-one approach improves their acting skills and enables their confidence to develop further. This is important not just for their enjoyment of acting but for the way they deal with real life!
Exams, which are taken at the Riverhouse Barn in Walton-on-Thames, are a positive experience for the students and they are encourage to discuss their work with the examiner. When students receive their results they are presented with a certificate and feedback from the examiner. So far our results have been excellent!
What it involves…
10 - 12 week preparation period, during which time they come to me once a week for half an hour. I provide them with scenes to prepare and work with them on these. The costs are as follows:
Pairs: £7 each per (half hour) session, for 10 sessions = £70
Solos: £14 per (half hour) session, for 10 sessions = £140
Exams vary from £26 - £40 depending on Grade.
There is a charge of £5.85 for using the exam centre at the Riverhouse Barn (but that saves a trip to the LAMDA centre in London)
